The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) on 3rd August 1995 by the federal government of Nigeria based on The Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act with the responsibilities for nuclear safety and radiological protection regulation in Nigeria. However he NNRA began effective operation in May, 2001.
The NNRA registers, licences, inspects and enforces nuclear safety and radiological protection in all practices in the country.
The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) has been provided with the mandate and mission of regulating, protecting and nuclear safety so as to ensure the protection of life, health, property and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, safety and security of radioactive sources and nuclear materials and, to enable Nigeria meet its international obligations on the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.
In general NNRA
- Provides stakeholders with the opportunity to be heard in accordance with the prescribed rules of procedure;
- Consults with stakeholders when establishing priorities, developing policies, and planning programs and services;
- Interacts with foreign nuclear regulators and appropriate national and international organizations, and cooperates with other jurisdictions; and
- Operates in an effective and efficient manner.

Director General/CEO
Prof. Lawrence Anikwe Dim
A new Director General has been appointed for the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA). He is Professor Lawrence Anikwe Dim.
Professor Dim is a Nuclear Physicist and until his appointment was a Professor at the Center for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Professor Timothy Chidozie Akpa
Professor Timothy Chidozie Akpa is the current Director, Radiological Safety.
He has a Ph.D in Radiation Physics (ABU, 1993) and a PGD in Radiation Protection (Witts, 2000) an M.Sc in Radiation Biophysics (ABU, 1986) and a Bachelor of Science in Physics (UNN, 1981). He had specialist training in radiation protection and radioactive waste management in, Egypt (1986 and 1988)
Dr. Yau Usman Idris
Dr. Yau Usman Idris is currently the Director of Authorization and Enforcement. He has a PhD in Applied Nuclear Physics (1998) from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, MSc in Physics (1992) from the University of Ibadan and B.Sc. (Hons) Physics (1988) from the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria
