The Beinecke Scholarship Program was created by The Sperry and Hutchinson Company in memory of Edwin, Frederick, and Walter Beinecke. This Scholarship provides funding to help in the graduate education of talented students in the department of humanities, social sciences, and arts. The Beinecke Scholarship enables highly motivated students with exceptional promise to pursue opportunities available to them.
Students from participating universities who have received need-based financial aid are given twenty scholarships each year. Graduate scholarships can be used both domestically and internationally, and they can be combined with other awards like assistantships and research grants. Scholars are encouraged to start graduate school as soon as they graduate from college, and they must use all funds within five years of receiving their undergraduate degrees.
HOST SCHOOLS
This Scholarship program is hosted by The Sperry and Hutchinson Company. Some of the participating schools and colleges of the Beinecke Scholarship include the University of Alabama, the University of Alaska, Boston University, the University of California, Brooklyn College, Brown University, Dickinson College, Kenyon College, and University of Pittsburgh, among others.
VALUES/INCLUSIONS
The Beinecke Scholarship awards a total of $35,000 for each scholar. Each scholar will receive $5,000 before beginning graduate school and an extra $30,000 while in graduate school.
REQUIREMENTS
Also, as a candidate for the Beinecke Scholarship, you must:
- Must show exceptional intellectual ability, academic achievement, and personal promise
- Be a junior in college currently aiming for a bachelor’s degree
- Consider enrolling in a master’s or doctoral program in the humanities, social sciences, or arts. Students planning to pursue graduate study in neuroscience in the social sciences are ineligible
- Be a U.S citizen, an American Samoan, or a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands nationals
- Possess a history of receiving institutional, state, or federal grants-in-aid for undergraduate studies that can be proven to be need-based. The student’s compliance with this requirement must be attested to by a financial aid officer from the school. The degree of financial need won’t play a significant role in the selection process. But preference is given to applicants for whom this
HOW TO APPLY
Beinecke Scholarship candidates must be nominated by GW; the Center for Undergraduate Fellowships and Research oversees the campus nomination procedure. Only one student may be nominated by GW each year.
Students who want to be nominated by GW for the Beinecke Scholarship must submit a complete application via the InfoReady portal of CUFR. Those applications contain:
- Beinecke Application Form
- Financial Aid Data Sheet
- Personal Statement of no more than 1000 words
- Unofficial transcript of GW (issued by the Student Services Hub; no GWeb-based transcripts please)
- Three (3) letters of recommendation from academics
ACCEPTANCE RATE
The Beinecke Scholarship has a low acceptance rate because it doesn’t offer a nationwide scholarship. This scholarship is offered to only U.S citizens, an American Samoan, or Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands nationals
DEADLINE
The deadline for the Beinecke Scholarship varies depending on the participating University. For instance, the deadline for Washington University and Stanford University is in the Mid November and 2nd January respectively.
