At least, 10 persons arrested for defrauding members of the unsuspecting public seeking employment into the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment, by the Chief Justice of the Federal High Court, Hon. Justice Ibrahim Auta.
This was revealed on Wednesday, by the Commandant General (CG) of the Corps, Abdullahi Mohammad, during the budget defense for 2017, with the House of Representatives Committee on Interior, National Assembly, Abuja.
The Chairman of the committee, Hon. Jagaban Adams Jagaban, had sought for clarification on the litany of recruitment advertorials on the social media, which report was made available to the committee.
Mr. Mohammad debunked any recruitment exercise ongoing at the NSCDC, adding that, it was the handiwork of some internet scammers, who specialize in defrauding desperate job seekers.
He explained that, some arrest had already been made and “the Federal High Court, Abuja, had on Monday, last week, sentenced 10 of them to 7 years imprisonment.”
The Commandant General, however, requested for the sum of N2bn in the 2017 appropriated budget, to enable the Corps carry our recruitment exercise.
When asked by the Committee, to give actual figures expected to be recruited, the CG, however, could not come out with specific estimate of required manpower.
He said, ” the Nigerian Railway Council requested for officers of the Corps to man railway security in 25 States.” He also mentioned the Ministry of Agriculture and other agencies, which made similar requests, hence, the need to recruit more hands.
