A former Media Adviser to former governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, has been assasinated in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Unknown gunmen on Sunday night shot dead Mr. Ben Onyechere, the former Media Adviser to former governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji.
A source told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Owerri that Onyechere was kidnapped at about 8 p.m. at Maris junction in Ikenegbu area of Owerri, the Imo State capital, where he had gone with his driver for shopping.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said “the gunmen numbering five trailed Onyechere to a popular supermarket in Ikenegbu and forced his driver out of his Lexus car before they sped off with Onyechere.
“The following day the lifeless body of Oncheyere was found a few streets away from Maris Junction, Ikenegbu Owerri, after he was shot several times. It is sad.’’
The source added that the deceased’s driver, who put up initial resistance was shot twice in the legs before Onyechere was kidnapped.
Another eyewitness told our correspondent that the suspected assailants armed with sophisticated weapons doubled-crossed Onyechere’s Lexus car at Maris junction, adjacent to Orchard Pharmacy and shot his driver to demobilise him before shooting the deceased.
He claimed that the robbers might have been led by a popular criminal, Henry Chibueze alias Vampire, who was recently freed when gunmen attacked a court in Owerri, where he was being tried for kidnap-related offences.
But when contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Enwerem, debunked the news making the rounds that it was the wanted Vampire that was behind the incident.
The Police spokesperson said that it was not possible for a wanted person to come out immediately to commit such a crime in a state capital where he had been declared wanted.
He said though he had heard the shooting that took place, but his office had yet to be briefed on the development.
