– Despite the bomb attack on their school by Boko Haram bombers on Monday, January 16, students of UNIMAID have remained defiant
– The students said they are not worried about Shekau’s threats of continued attacks on government institutions and places of learning because his words are empty
– Some of the students however called proactive security measures to contain the frequent attacks on their campus by Boko Haram insurgents
The chilling audio message released by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau claiming responsibility for the Monday, January 16 bomb attack on a mosque in the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has been dismissed with a wave of the hand by students of the institution.
Vanguard reports that some of the students who spoke with media men on Tuesday, January 17 after the audio which was posted on YouTube, a video sharing platform on Monday went viral.
Although some of the students called proactive security measures to contain the frequent attacks on their campus by Boko Haram insurgents, others feel that Shekau and his group cannot stop the school from continuing with its activities.
“This is not the first time Shekau has been making empty threats on UNIMAID.
“You will recall he even said he would take over the campus sometimes ago but nothing happened,” a student Malam Ibrahim Sale said.
Another student Goni Mahmoud said: “We in Borno have seen it all. Since the University has never being closed even for once what made him (Shekau) think anyone will take him seriously.
“We believe his (Shekau) days are numbered; the army will be on his trail until he has no more hiding place.”
On his own part, another student Salamatu Bashir said the military and school authorities should take measures to prevent another attack in future.
“The authorities must take the issue seriously and block every route Boko Haram insurgents use to get into the university.
“Honestly I am still in fear because we do not know when they will strike next,” Bashir said.
Recall that Boko Haram leader Shekau released an audio on Monday, January 16 claiming responsibility for the attack on the university and saying the university was attacked for participating in ‘ungodly’ acts.
